A month ago, many online viewers were touched by a photo, on the East Campus of Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Dr. Kai Liu (Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University) took a break on his way escorting an 87-year old patient named Xin Liu for a CT scan, just to let him enjoy the sun-set that he hadn't seen for a long time. Fortunately, the old gentleman recently recovered and was discharged from the hospital. As part of a "national team" in the fight against COVID-19, Zhongshan Hospital is responsible for various prevention and control tasks, such as dispatching a medical team of respiratory specialists to Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, and assisting Hubei with medical care

 

As the global pandemic becomes increasingly severe, Zhongshan Hospital output a plan based on the hands-on practices and expert experiences of assisting in Hubei to medical workers around the world. On April 8, the worldwide release meeting on topics of Fudan Zhongshan Guidance on COVID-19 Prevention and Control was held in Zhongshan hospital, for which Zhongshan is the main sponsor, with Mindray, Tencent Technology, and Huawei as the co-organizers.

 

With focus on topics of COVID-19 pandemic, prevention and control strategies, and treatment and care of patients, the meeting released Fudan Zhongshan Guidance on COVID-19 Prevention and Control (hereinafter referred to as Zhongshan Guidance), based on the experience of the hospital. The guidance has been translated into English, Spanish, and French.

Zhongshan Guidance explains procedures from the emergency department, fever department, outpatient flow to outpatient classification management, to enhance prevention & control systems in the hospital. As the landscape varying, the hospital applied polices to seamlessly integrate medical routines and COVID-19 P&C works by refining the management of medical services.

At the same time, the Guidance is easy to implement, covering innovative measures of Zhongshan Hospital. For instance, Zhongshan Hospital set up two different fever sections, one is for patients conforming to typical epidemiology, having close contact with positive patients, or being part of a cluster of infections, and the other is for normal fever patients. Both sections are equipped with dedicated CT rooms. In this way, all patients got sorted timely without the risk of cross infection, laying a solid foundation for the fight.

Professor Jia Fan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and president of Zhongshan Hospital, said China would continue to actively fight against the pandemic. When the Guidance was released, some experts from Zhongshan Hospital were still conducting international online consultations with experts and scholars from the United States, Italy, Germany, and Japan for severe patients.

 

In the forum, Prof. Bijie Hu, director of the Infectious Diseases Department at Zhongshan Hospital, gave a keynote speech, in which he shared insights into the future trend of the global pandemic, and proposed measures based on experiences of China. Major contributors, including Prof Yuanlin Song (Respiratory Medicine Department), Prof. Duming Zhu (ICU Department) and Prof. Yuxia Zhang (Nursing Department), explored the Guidance from their own perspectives.

 

After its release, Prof. Tongyu Zhu, director of Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center led a heated conversation between Chinese and foreign experts. During the session, some experts from China and overseas joined via remote methods, including Prof. Junbo Ge (academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences),  Prof. Chouwen Zhu, stillin quarantine back from Wuhan, as well as officials from the European Headquarters of the WHO and health ministries of some countries. These experts shared their experiences, and discussed on trends and how to integrate prevention and control measures into daily medical works.

Heated Discussions among Global Experts

During the discussion, Zaiwen Li, senior vice-president of Mindray, said that as COVID-19 developed into a global public health challenge, openness, sharing, and collaboration were keys for success. Mindray is still striving to build a global communication platform to share China's experience and drive worldwide cooperation.

 

Over 20,000 audience from 10+ countries witnessed the first global publication of Zhongshan Guidance. Mindray's technology supports core departments including laboratories, critical care units, emergency departments, imaging and others. Moreover, Mindray set up an academic exchange platform for hundreds of thousands of Chinese and foreign medical workers to share experiences in fighting COVID-19.
