The Power Behind the Panda Protectors

“Mindray underwent a custom R&D and design process to account for unique characteristics in our giant pandas’ samples. This act of co-innovation has made a meaningful contribution to the clinical relevance of our work.”

                                                                                        - Wenjun Huang - Veterinarian
Veterinary Hospital at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

Known as the “national treasure” of China, the giant panda is a rare and endangered wild animal with a population of less than 2,000. In order to save and protect this endangered species, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (or “Chengdu Panda Base”) proactively engages in giant panda conservation work, strengthening the artificial breeding process to increase their numbers, and also rewilding giant pandas to supplement and rejuvenate their wild population.

The veterinarians at the Chengdu Panda Base closely monitor every aspect of the pandas’ daily lives, including their fertility and reproduction. They perform daily examinations on the giant pandas to actively prevent disease. A core requirement of veterinarians at the base is how to make more active, expedient diagnoses.

In order to assist the vets in resolving these problems, Mindray’s Chengdu R&D Center worked closely with the Panda Base to co-develop a custom version of the fully automated, five-part hematology analyzer, the BC-5000Vet, to help them perform blood tests on the pandas. This custom version of the BC-5000Vet is the result of special R&D and design aimed at addressing the unique characteristics of panda samples to greatly improve the efficiency of blood tests in preventing disease.

In addition, Mindray provided the Chengdu Panda Base with a fully automated BS-190 chemical analyzer, portable BeneView T1 monitors, and PM9000Vet monitors to more comprehensively support the varied needs of panda treatment.

Today, the Chengdu Panda Base has become one of the world's foremost research centers leading off-site conservation engineering efforts for giant pandas and other endangered species. As the power that supports the panda protectors, Mindray will continue to work hand-in-hand with expert veterinarians at the base to ensure the ongoing health and propagation of these national treasures.

Make White Rhinoceros Live Again

csr15-s4

White rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is one of the largest existing rhinos. It is divided into two subspecies, northern white rhinoceros and southern white rhinoceros. They live respectively in the grasslands of central and southern Africa. There are about 20,000 southern white rhinoceros in existence; in contrast, the northern white rhinoceros is on the verge of extinction - Sudan, the world's last known male northern white rhinoceros, died in Kenya on 19 March 2018. Najin and Fatu, the only two northern white rhinoceros that are confirmed existing, are kept in the Opejeta Nature Reserve in Kenya.

To save the endangered species, Mindray cooperates with the NGO by providing Mindray M7Vet ultrasound solution for IVF. On May 14th, 2019, the oocyte retrieval for a female white rhinoceros was successfully conducted as an attempt to protect global biodiversity.
