Every three minutes, a child with cleft conditions is born in the world, and this happens more frequently than most people realize. People living in remote areas and facing economic hardship struggle to seek timely and safe surgical treatment. If left untreated, the impact on their health can be significant, leading to issues with nutrition and speech difficulties, which in turn may pose risks to their psychological well-being.

Some children with cleft conditions are often kept out of sight, but we choose to do the opposite. We take him out to play everywhere we go, giving him the same experiences as any other child. Our goal is for him to know that he is no different from anyone else.

When the doctor told me that the surgery would leave two scars, I felt that it was something I could accept. I wanted to be brave for myself.

A Decade-long Promise

Operation Smile is a non-governmental organization (NGO), has been dedicated to providing safe reconstructive surgery for children in need since 1982.

Ten years ago, Mindray North America team began sowing the seeds of cooperation with Operation Smile. In August 2023, those seeds of smiles and hope started to sprout. Mindray and Operation Smile, standing shoulder to shoulder, proudly announced their momentous 10-Year strategic partnership, fueled by a collective passion to enhance healthcare for vulnerable communities. And so, we embark on our first voyage into the heart of Wenshan, Yunan, China, where transformation awaits.

Operation Smile China Medical Center is a seed that brings hope and smiles to patients. Mindray is committed to providing continuous technical support to the hospital and assisting in the training of medical staff. We are fostering this seed to blossom, bear fruit, and grow incessantly, benefiting more patients and becoming a benchmark for cleft lip and palate surgical treatment and care.

The hospital is projected to complete over 1,000 surgeries and train nearly 200 medical staff within the first 5 years of operation.

All for Smile

"If they were your children, what would you do?"

Dr. Wang Xiaowei, President of Operation Smile Greater China, posed this question to everyone as the charity consultation began.

In just a few remarkable days of the consultation and surgery, a powerful connection was forged between the passionate volunteers from Mindray and the little patients. They became more than just helpers - they became playmates, brothers, and sisters.

For three consecutive days, Mindray volunteers assisted in screening approximately 120 patients and the successful completion of 77 surgeries.
