When Wollongong Private Hospital opened in January 2016, CEO David Crowe had a vision for a state-of-the art facility that would attract doctors and patients from Sydney hospitals. He envisioned a hospital with the latest technology that would improve procedures and patient care every step of the way.

Wollongong Private Hospital is part of the Ramsay Health Care group and specialises in cardiology, orthopaedics, obstetrics, urology, neurosurgery, day surgery, oncology and general surgery.

David Crowe looked to Mindray for an integrated monitoring solution that would improve nurse’s workflow, provide best practice for patient care and provide the after sales support that was often lacking in other suppliers.

David Crowe said, “We wanted an integrated solution across the hospital and Mindray’s certainly done that.”

Having worked with Mindray at his previous hospital, David Crowe looked to them to provide a comprehensive solution for the new hospital. This included training staff before the hospital opened within extremely tight deadlines. He said, “They didn't leave until all the staff were trained, so that sort of commitment is a little bit unheard of from some of the big companies. The staff all rave about the project. They are all very happy with it.”

The Mindray solution includes the BeneView T1 Patient Monitor and Transport Solution that stays with the patient throughout their time in the hospital. This is wirelessly connected to a central monitoring system and enables caregivers to monitor the patient remotely. It also provides immediate access to the patient’s data and includes historical records of the patient and wireless printing of reports.

Emma Grant Nurse Unit Manager, Coronary Care Unit, said this is an easy to use solution. “The T1 makes transporting patients a lot easier because we can simply clip the transport module out from the bedside monitor and take it with us. I've used a lot of different systems. I've worked through a lot of different hospitals, and this is definitely the most user-friendly.”

The system integrates with the Mindray anaesthesia machines and Mindray touch screen monitors. Margaret Johnstone, Nurse Unit Manager, Theatre, said “The information in the anaesthesia machine can be then moved to the recovery unit so we've got a consistency of observations on that patient throughout the operation as well as their recovery period.”

Mindray’s great value is in the after sales support it offers the hospital. Brett Hazelgrove, Cardiac Services Manager, said, “The support from Mindray is great. They're a lot more hands on.”

Since opening the hospital David Crowe said they have had 32 new surgeons come on the books and is being contacted on a weekly basis from doctors in Sydney who are looking to now establish a practice in Wollongong.

While the Mindray solution does as expected and is intuitive to use, David Crowe is most impressed with continued support from Mindray. He said, “That support is key to the success and ongoing success of the relationship.”
