In this process of upgradation, the most critical challenge was to cope with the increased foot fall in NICU and to maintain the same efficiency of work, and hence the need of automation came in. Yes, it is getting automation in its pathology and laboratory department to cut down on lead time of processing the samples, thereby increasing the efficiency and ease of work with accuracy. This automation is coming up with the help of latest technology and favorable infrastructural developments in the unit.
Again it has one of its kind, well equipped, state-of the- art infrastructure with modular cardiac OT, cardiac intensive care unit and Cath lab with competent nursing and doctors team. Since inception, over 1800 babies have undergone surgical treatment with excellent results. The success rates are 100% till now and comparable to the best hospitals in the country as well as the developed countries. The lab’s workload has doubled in recent years due to the expansion of the hospital. The increase in activity has demanded significant changes in all areas of the laboratory.
When Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital began reorganization, several important goals were set including: automating and streamlining manual processes and integrating different analytical areas into a combined laboratory service. To achieve these goals, Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital lab required the most advanced technology available, with particular importance placed on improving sample management and laboratory processes, without increasing costs. Key selection criteria focused on analyser speed, technological advancement and reagent quality (both chemistry and hematology), and an overall improvement in organisational efficiency.

HIGH SPEED AND HIGHER EFFICIENCY
The high-speed capacity of the CAL 8000, with its capability of handling 250 samples per hour, provides the crucial first step in helping the lab successfully achieve its current performance levels. With less time needed to process manual differentials and slide reviews, technologists now have more time to do other things in the lab. It all contributes to higher lab efficiency.
“We needed to increase efficiency, reduce TAT and provide accurate test results, with minimal involvement of laboratory staff. We wanted to do all this and improve the quality of patient care. Mindray new CAL 8000 offers a smart solution, or rather, a smart expert – the labXpert 2.0. It is a software that can automatically sort out the 'suspected' samples for manual validation. The pathologist then decides if rerun or microscopic review is warranted based on their clinical experience. It avoids wasting slides and reduces extra work. Moreover, the onboard automated 're-exam' functionality also helps enhance work efficiency,” says he. Mindray was chosen to provide the flexible, total laboratory automation solution and hematology expertise, but the lab had specific high-volume clinical chemistry requirements. It needed high speed and throughput; an hourly maximum throughput of about 800 tests, which has minimum sample and reaction volume. it also needed a more sample processing and use of friendly software. Mindray BS-800 software is so user-friendly, anyone can operate it.
“Being the largest NICU in Mumbai, it’s important that we operate as productively and efficiently as possible, and that’s exactly what the CAL 8000 and new BS-800 allow us to do. All tests are done quicker and our turnaround times have improved significantly,” says Mr. Reny Varghese.
