Fostering a Sustainable Future: Mindray and Himmotthan Society build Water Learning Centre in Uttarakhand

2024-04-15

Mindray India believes in being a responsible corporate cosmopolite by giving back their time and resources to society through philanthropy, volunteering, personal engagement, and pro-bono services. We have always been on the frontline of delivering sustainable solutions and creating a positive impact on society through our resolute actions.

Water Learning Centre in Uttarakhand

In Uttarakhand, most of the village water supply schemes are from springs, and the discharge of these springs continuously declines yearly. There are multiple reasons for the decline, one of the main causes is people being less involved in water management and having a lesser understanding of the management of natural resources like water. To create awareness about reviving springs and to provide training on the management and usage of water, Mindray partnered with the Himmotthan Society to build a Water Learning Centre in the villages of Chureddhar and Chamba in the Tehri Districts of Uttarakhand.

Installation of Flume and Sensor

To measure the discharge of a spring through the scientific method one must calculate the amount of water flowing from the spring per minute. This is a manual process and can be inaccurate due to human error. To reduce this human error, a 0.6-foot HS flume with a calibrated Odyssey capacitance-based water level sensor was installed at the Learning Centre for measuring the spring discharge.

Spring typology models

Spring typology models were also installed at the learning center to illustrate the mountain aquifer systems. These models will help explain the area identification for spring shed management, LULC (Land use land cover), multiple methods of water conservation, and much more.

Geological Instruments-Springshed surveying tools

A geological hammer, Brunton, and a high-accuracy GPS are basic tools to help the demarcation of the springshed. We also provided these surveying and geological instruments which were required at the learning centre.

Impact:

The Water Learning Centre will help the communities develop an understanding of ecology and the spring system so that they may manage and make optimal utilization of natural resources in a sustainable manner.

The training centre will also be linked with multi-thematic projects of Himmotthan (Agricultural, Rural tourism, education etc) and could provide an open learning space for students, and visitors interested in forestry, water management practices, and the co-relation between forest-water-flora and fauna.

Mindray is proud to be a part of this initiative that will create a meaningful difference in the lives of the local community. We will continue to deliver such long-term sustainable solutions to build a brighter, better and healthier Bharat.
