Types of Surgical Tables: A Comprehensive Overview

Different specialties require operating tables with unique features to support optimal positioning for surgery, stability, and imaging capability. The various types include:

Overview +
General Surgical Tables
General surgical operating tables are versatile solutions for the operating room. They support a wide range of common procedures, from general surgery to gynecology, providing a stable platform for safely positioning patients in the postures required for optimal surgical access.
Supine Gen SURG

Orthopedic and Fracture Tables
Orthopedic procedures, particularly those involving trauma and fractures, require exceptional control over patient positioning and imaging capabilities. A dedicated orthopedic and fracture table enables surgeons to stabilize bones and confirm alignment and implant placement intraoperatively.
Ortho Traction

Radiolucent Imaging and C-Arm Tables
Fluoroscopy-guided procedures depend on unobstructed imaging to guide clinicians. Radiolucent imaging tables, also used as pain management tables for interventional procedures such as nerve blocks and spinal injections, are made from materials like carbon fiber, which are transparent to X-rays. This design reduces visual interference, allowing the C-arm to capture 360-degree imaging.
Lateral Radiolucent

Urology and Cystoscopy Tables
A dedicated urology and cystoscopy table features a perineal cutout and an integrated drainage system to manage fluids and provide unobstructed access during procedures. The design also facilitates patient positioning in the lithotomy position, helping support procedural efficiency.
Urology

Bariatric Surgical Tables
Caring for bariatric patients requires solutions that can safely accommodate higher weight capacities and larger body masses. Bariatric surgical operation tables offer enhanced stability, higher weight limits, and wider surfaces. These features promote patient safety and provide clinical teams with a stable, accessible platform for performing procedures.

How to Choose a Surgical Table for Your Facility

A thoughtful assessment of your procedural needs and technical requirements can help you choose a surgical table that supports your facility's long-term needs. Key considerations include:

  • Patient weight capacity: Confirm that the table can support the weight capacity of the full range of patients you treat, including bariatric cases
  • Imaging compatibility: Determine your imaging needs. For procedures requiring C-arm, O-arm, or X-ray use, a table with a carbon-fiber or other radiolucent top is essential for high-quality images
  • Table articulation and positioning: Look for a table with the necessary height, Trendelenburg, lateral tilt, and flexion/extension capabilities to provide optimal surgical site access
  • Modularity and accessories: A modular design with a wide range of operating table accessories, such as headrests, arm boards, and traction devices, allows clinicians to adapt a single table for various specialties, maximizing its utility and return on investment
  • Ergonomics for the surgical team: The table should enable clinicians to work comfortably, with sufficient legroom and clear access to controls and patient positioning functions. This easy-to-move design reduces fatigue and helps maintain focus during long procedures
The Mindray HyBase V6 Surgical Table

The HyBase V6 Surgical Table offers flexibility for a range of patient profiles and surgical procedures. This versatile solution enables consistent patient positioning with motorized height and tilt adjustments that support clinical workflows. The surgical table’s central column design maximizes legroom for surgeons to reduce fatigue during long procedures, while its eight wheels promote maneuverability. Its adaptability makes it suitable for general surgery, ENT, bariatric procedures, and imaging-dependent interventions requiring C-arm integration.

V6 Poster

The HyBase V6 features a multi-layer decompression pad to minimize pressure points during long procedures, and its bellows-free design helps simplify cleaning and support infection prevention. For imaging-dependent procedures, the table offers an optional carbon-fiber top and slide capabilities, enabling full-body C-arm imaging without repositioning the patient. Its color-coded indication technology provides timely alerts for excessive Trendelenburg positions, enabling clinicians to make adjustments that promote patient safety.

Key specifications include:

  • Static weight capacity: Up to 1,000 lbs
  • Full slide capacity: Up to 550 lbs
  • Height range: 23.4" to 43"
  • Trendelenburg/reverse Trendelenburg: ±38°
  • Lateral tilt: ±26°
