Mindray's BeneView Series Monitors Integrate Covidien's Nellcor™ BIS™ X4 Brain Monitoring Software

Mindray is the first multinational OEM in the world to incorporate bilateral brain activity monitoring into its monitors

Shenzhen – June 22, 2010 - Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co., Ltd.(NYSE: MR), a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices worldwide, today announced the integration of Covidien’s Nellcor™ BIS™ X4 technology into its BeneView Series of multi-parameter patient monitors. BIS X4 technology allows physicians to monitor both hemispheres of the patient’s brain simultaneously and in real time, providing highly sophisticated data that enables them to make optimal decisions for safer patient care.
The incorporation of BIS X4 technology into Mindray’s top-of-the-line multi-parameter BeneView Series patient monitors allows physicians for the first time to integrate critical data on patients’ brain activity with information on other vital signs before, during and after anesthesiology and surgery.  As these BIS X4-enhanced BeneView Series monitors are adopted, clinicians around the world will be able to tailor more accurately their anesthesia delivery, and thereby improve patient outcomes, minimize severe complications, and reduce healthcare costs.
“By incorporating BIS X4 into its premier BeneView Series monitors, Mindray has raised the bar in OEM capabilities and demonstrated its commitment to provide clinicians worldwide with user-friendly, affordable access to the most advanced monitoring technologies. And the breathtaking pace of the Mindray BIS X4 integration demonstrates that focused teamwork between two strong partners can generate impressive results,” said David Sheppard, Vice President, OEM Channel Strategy, Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions, Covidien. “We were delighted with how seamlessly we were able to work across continents with Mindray to deliver a solution quickly that our global customers wanted.”
Covidien’s BIS technology provides a direct, real-time measure of the effects of anesthetics and sedatives on the brain. Optimally, anesthesiologists try to deliver sufficient anesthesia to maintain patient sedation and prevent surgery recall during medical procedures, but always with the goal of using as little anesthetic as possible.  Rare but critical failures can lead either to patient awareness during surgery if too little medication is used, or life-threatening respiratory depression if too much is used.
The critical improvement that BIS X4, the latest advancement to BIS, offers is to allow clinicians to compare activity between hemispheres of the brain, identify imbalances, and intervene as needed to achieve best and safest patient outcomes. Studies indicate that BIS-monitored patients wake up faster, are extubated sooner, are better oriented upon arrival to the PACU, and are eligible for PACU discharge sooner.Additionally, BIS technology may help clinicians titrate anesthesia levels more precisely, which may decrease costs for surgical procedures and ICU care. Making BIS X4 technology available through BeneView Series units will enable physicians to adapt treatment to meet the specific needs of their patients while effectively managing resource consumption.
The BeneView Series patient monitors support a broad range of continuous monitoring capabilities for patients at all acuity levels of the hospital. With them, clinical teams can access the precise data they need to provide optimal care at a patient’s bedside and during transport. Additionally, features like high resolution touchscreens, user-defined layout, and independent and remote display capabilities allow clinicians to configure and view the information that is most meaningful to their patients. Integrating BIS X4 technology into BeneView Series patient monitors allows surgeons, anesthesiologists, OR nurses and critical care clinicians to incorporate valuable information about the functioning of both hemispheres of the brain into their treatment decisions without having to employ an additional device.

“Space in operating and recovery rooms is finite, and as technology advances and new monitoring devices become available, it is important to consider how they will fit into surgical suites, patient rooms and hospital budgets,” said Richard Yang Ting, VP International Marketing, Mindray. “This partnership with Covidien is a perfect example of Mindray’s constant pursuit of better, more advanced technologies to incorporate into our products.  Integrating BIS X4 into our BeneView Series monitors ensures our customers can simply and affordably tap into the best our industry has to offer.”

“Across the healthcare landscape, smart, strategic partnerships are helping patients, clinicians and hospitals gain access to the best medical care, easily and efficiently. Working with Mindray to incorporate BIS X4 into the BeneView Series patient monitors is an excellent example of Covidien achieving its global mission -- to improve patient safety, enhance medical efficacy and increase healthcare efficiency,” said Pete Wehrly, President, Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions, Covidien. “We are proud to announce this partnership, which offers our technology to Mindray customers globally.”
