What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the body can’t produce enough insulin or use insulin effectively, thus resulting in the abnormal rise of blood glucose level. However, some people with type 2 diabetes have symptoms so mild that they go unnoticed. In this case, they may live for months, even years without knowing they have the disease. Early detection and effective treatment is essential to help decrease their risk of developing the terrible complications of diabetes.

Diabetes diagnosis

Any one of the following tests can be used for diagnosis:

Fasting plasma glucose (FPG)

Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)

Random plasma glucose (RPG)

and others.

While the traditional blood glucose testing may provide inaccurate results, the HbA1c test is the standard for diabetes diagnosis that measures a person’s average blood glucose for the past 2 to 3 months.
